Iceland’s Bars and Restaurants Becoming Smoke Free from 1st of June 2007
On the 1st of June 2007 Iceland will join many European and non-European countries with comprehensive smoke free workplace legislation. On the 2nd of June 2006 the Icelandic parliament approved a bill proposing smoke free bars and restaurants from the 1st of June 2007 with a huge margin.
The bill passed, 42 yes to 3 no (18 not attending). The Icelandic ban will apply to all restaurants, cafes, bars, pubs and nightclubs – anywhere people receive service of any kind. Since 1996 smoking has been banned in all workplaces and places where service is given except in before mentioned places. From the 1st of June 2007 all workers will have the same benefits of a smoke free environment during their work hours.
