The Public Relation and Education division also sees to all public relations matters, interaction with the media, the organization of conferences and official meetings held on behalf of the Institute. Particular emphasis is placed on the importance of providing easy access to information through the Institute’s web site, www.publichealth.is
Communication
The Institute’s website provides the latest updates on the Institute’s information and activities, and it also enables easy access to staff. Particular emphasis has been placed on publicizing the website so that nationwide it is known that all the information disseminated by the Institute can easily accessed. Information that is highly useful to many, e.g. those in the public health sector, teachers, parents and young people. Since the range of categories covered is extensive, the aim is to try and make the search for specific information as user friendly as possible. The intention is to have more of the site’s material available in English.
For the most part the role of the Institute is the dissemination of information and educational material. The Institute makes available to the public material of an educational nature through articles, advertisements, posters and brochures. Depending on the category and the target group at any given time, the Institute will select the most appropriate information and the most effective medium for channeling this information to the target group. Ways of getting our message across have included print matter, commercials shown on TV or elsewhere, lectures, advertisements and the Institute’s own web site. It is possible to obtain any of this material and order copies.

The Institute possesses a well-educated and dedicated staff who work in close cooperation with other public bodies, companies, groups and individuals involved in preventive programs and who have as their aim the advancement of public health in Iceland. It is the Institute’s policy to regularly provide updates on those matters of public concern it is dealing with.
Staff provide interviews, write articles or appear on TV, so as to further draw attention to the Institute’s activities. Articles by the Institute’s staff have been published both in international and Icelandic journals.

Conferences
The institute takes an active part in some Scandinavian and European conferences, as well as undertaking its own.
The 19th Nordic Conference on Alcohol and Drug Prevention was held in Reykjavík 2003. Read more.
