Everything affects us - especially ourselves! is on of the institute´s interdisciplinary projects and it is a mutual development project of the Public Health Institute of Iceland and 25 municipalities in Iceland. It started formally in 2005; the first part of the project will conclude two years later and the second part after six years.

goalStrategy Map

The strategy map shows factors which are deemed to be critical success factors for the project. We are of the view that these critical success factors are crucial to attaining the objectives of the project, i.e. to enhance the skills and knowledge of children and families, as well as improving facilities and conditions in the municipality with regard to physical activity and diet. The critical success factors span four fields: finance, human resources, processes, and outcome.

Cooperation is the keyword Influnecing factors - enlarge picture

The circumstances of children and youths are shaped by society as a whole. If the plan is to improve the lifestyle of young people, cooperation is the keyword. In this respect, school and other educational institutions, the healthcare service, sports and youth programmes, the economy and social organisations play an important role, not to mention the family itself.

Several factors influcencing the well-being

and health of children.

Map of participating municipalities - enlarge mapMunicipalities' role

Each municipality formulates its own policy and action plan regarding children's lifestyle, with emphasis on increased physical activity and improved diet. The approach can differ in accordance with different circumstances in municipalities.

In each municipality an interdisciplinary task force has been formed to keep track of implementation of the project in its area. The map to the left shows the municipalities participating in the project.

Public Health Institute of Iceland's role

Project manager supervises the project, works on its build-up and is the contact person for the municipalities. The project manager has the support of an interdisciplinary council, which provides consultancy and support in accordance with the wishes of each municipality. The Public Health Institute of Iceland organises courses for interested parties and holds joint meetings with municipalities. The centre's home page will provide a communications network for the project.

There has been developed a checklist that the municipalities can use to evaluate their status with respect to physical activity, nutrition and the related environment. Separate indicators have been developed from this checklist for community planners, primary school, kindergarten, parent-teacher organizations, school health services, sport clubs. Based on the list, it should be possible to map what is being done, where special emphases are required with respect to cost and other factors.
